More infoPlatelet-rich plasma contains platelets and signaling proteins involved in normal tissue responses. Researchers are investigating topical and injectable preparations in selected chronic wounds and other tissue injuries. Evidence is variable and does not establish a universal benefit.
Evaluation for infection, impaired circulation, diabetes, pressure, and other underlying causes is essential. Evidence-based wound management may include cleaning, dressings, pressure off-loading, and referral when appropriate. PRP is not a substitute for these measures.
Potential issues include discomfort, bruising, infection, cost, and lack of improvement. A clinician must determine whether any adjunctive treatment is appropriate.
